1. Easiest: General
Accommodations in lodge, cabin or camp. Access to community services. Daily non-motorized travel of less than 3 hours. Skill level: Beginner
Land
based:
Mostly level terrain, well marked and maintained trails
Water
based:
Small lakes, rivers and few rapids. Portages are short and well-marked. Instructional courses may last 6 hours.
2. Easy: General
Generally more nights in a lodge, cabin or camp than a tent. Daily nonmotorized travel of 3 – 5 hours. Skill level: Beginner with some experience.
Land
based:
Gentle rolling terrain. Well-marked trails.
Water
based:
Larger lakes and class 1 rapids with the possibility of some class II rapids
3. Moderate: General
Generally more nights in a lodge, cabin or camp than a tent. Daily nonmotorized travel of 3 – 5 hours. Skill level: Beginner with some experience.
Land
based:
Gentle rolling terrain. Well-marked trails.
Water
based:
Larger lakes and class 1 rapids with the possibility of some class II rapids
4. Challenging: General
Mostly tent style camping. Self-sufficient trip in remote areas. Relatively high level of effort. Daily non-motorized travel 5 – 7 hours. Requires some previous experience of a similar nature. Skill level: Intermediate to expert. Must have a high degree of fitness.
Land
based:
More undulating terrain. Sequence of slopes. Backcountry.
Water
based:
Class II – III rapids. Exposed lakes. Maybe tides and strong currents.
5. Very
challenging:
General
Requires adequate preparation for a great wilderness adventure. Daily nonmotorized travel could exceed 8 hours. Accommodation in tents. Physically and mentally challenging. Requires experience and self-reliance. Skill level: Expert with lots of previous experience. Must be exceptionally fit.
Land
based:
Rough terrain, abrupt slopes. Some wildlife trails. Presence of unpacked snow, pack ice and pressure ridges in winter
Water
based:
Many difficult rapids and longer portages. Possibility of big waves.
